LPG in Rural Residential Care: Reliable and Cost-Effective Energy

The care home industry is currently facing multiple challenges that range from the increasingly ageing population, the proposed lifetime caps on paying for care as well as ensuring compliance with the Care Standards Act.

Care homes located off the mains gas grid have the additional challenge of accessing a cost-effective heating and fuel source that will meet the needs of the staff and residents. LPG offers a reliable, convenient and green solution that meets the varied needs of rural residential care:

Temperature Control:

Maintaining a consistent temperature is of paramount importance in care homes. Cold temperatures can be very dangerous to older people's health increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. For residential homes without access to natural gas on the mains, LPG provides immediate, consistent and reliable heat, ensuring that ambient temperatures are quickly achieved and easily maintained.

Catering Needs:

Cooking on gas has always been the preferred choice for establishments that need to cater for large numbers, and LPG gives this choice to establishments located off the gas grid. The importance of well-cooked food for older people cannot be underestimated as they can suffer more acute symptoms from food poisoning. Our immune systems and digestion systems slow with age mean fighting bacteria is more difficult, therefore thoroughly cooked food is vital to the wellbeing of both residents and staff. As LPG behaves in the same way as natural gas, chefs are able to cook on standard gas hobs allowing for controllable and reliable cooking.

Ease-of-use:

LPG tanks can be installed above or below ground and can be fitted with telemetry systems that alert the supplier when fuel needs replenishing, making delivery of continuous supplies easy and straightforward to manage.

Green Credentials:

LPG‘s green credentials only add to its many other benefits. It performs well when compared to other traditional off-gas grid fuels, emitting 35% less CO2 than coal, almost no black carbon, low particle and NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions and low sulphur content.

For rural care homes, LPG's low carbon properties help to improve their green credentials, while at the same time, its efficiency as an instant and clean fuel supply can greatly reduce running costs and can be used in the latest high efficiency boilers.

These features have given LPG a proven track record in sectors that have intensive high energy needs throughout the year, such as the care industry. A care home in Lincolnshire has attested to the benefits of using LPG. With an annual usage of 24,000 litres, they found the use of LPG not only provided a very similar experience to natural gas, but also the customer service and assistance from their supplier meant that this was one area of running the home that they didn't have to worry about.
