A New Edition of Code of Practice Launched

UKLPG is delighted to announce the publication of the 2009 edition of Code of Practice 1 part 1 Bulk LPG Storage at Fixed Installations: Design, Installation and Operation of Vessels Located above Ground.

The new edition of this code, a must-have technical reference for those in the LPG industry, has been through a full review process in consultation with technical representatives from the industry. It is the first of several new editions of UKLPG Codes of Practice to be expected this year.

There is a mixture of changes to this edition. Firstly there are substantial changes which include:
·         Siting of Vapourisers, where the distance between any vaporiser and the nearest building, boundary or fixed source of ignition has been redefined in terms of the water capacity of the vapouriser and the section on installation of vapourisers in buildings has been deleted as this now requires detailed consideration of the individual installation under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations.

·         Fixed Maximum Liquid Level Devices, to allow devices which signal electrically to indicate when the maximum permitted level is reached during filling.

·         Fire Precautions, which now reflect changes to the statutory environment (the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in England and Wales and the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005) and also simplify the requirements as regards water supply.

·         Electrical Requirements, to align with current practice.

·         Vessel Leak Test methods, to stress the asphyxiation risk when using inert gas.

·         Typical Properties of LPG, which has been re-edited to make it more relevant to the twenty first century (it is anticipated that this will be copied across other UKLPG Codes in due course).

·         Area Classification, which has been developed in line with experience and to align with AEGPL guidance.

Secondly there are a host of changes to references which are necessary to keep the code up to date.
UKLPG is grateful to those who made input to the changes both in drafting and as part of the Consultation as well as to HSE who provided valuable input both during the Consultation and when considering comments made during the Consultation. HSE continue to endorse the Code.

Having recently republished Code of Practice 1 Part 4 Bulk LPG Storage at Fixed Installations: Buried/ Mounded LPG Storage Vessels in 2008, work is now underway to review Code of Practice 1 Part 2 Bulk LPG Storage at Fixed Installations: Small Bulk Installations for Domestic Purposes so look out for further announcements during 2009.
