Carbon Monoxide - Be Safe, Be Aware!

As the colder weather bites and central heating systems and other LPG fuelled appliances are turned on, UKLPG strongly urges consumers to make sure that they have their LPG appliances are serviced regularly by a Gas Safe Registered engineer and that they have a working audible carbon monoxide alarm fitted.

Carbon Monoxide is produced from the combustion of carbon based fuels, it is both colourless and odourless which is why it is often referred to as the silent killer. Carbon Monoxide is a potential danger when appliances are not well maintained and their location is not well ventilated.

There are some easy ways to make sure you stay safe:
  • Fit and audible CO alarm
  • Have your appliances serviced regularly by a Gas Safe Registered engineer
  • Make sure vents, flues and chimneys are not blocked

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – What to look out for
The six main symptoms are headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness.

Take Action
  • Get an audible alarm - alarms can be bought from many DIY stores, some supermarkets and energy suppliers.
  • Get your appliances serviced – make sure your gas appliances are serviced annually by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. To find a Gas Safe Registered engineer please visit – www.gassaferegister.co.uk
  • Look out for the signs – the symptoms themselves, sooting or staining around your appliance or a lazy yellow or orange flame rather than a blue one.

Should you spot any of these signs take immediate action; open doors or windows for ventilation, call your suppliers 24hr emergency telephone, and seek medical attention.
